(Inspired by the Four Stages of Spiritual Growth by Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith)
The Journey of Spiritual Growth
Spiritual growth is not a single event but a continuous unfolding—a deepening into truth, love, and conscious living. Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith, founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center, has articulated a powerful framework to understand this journey: the Four Stages of Spiritual Growth.
These stages are not rigid boxes, but energetic orientations. Most of us move fluidly between them in different areas of our lives. Still, identifying where you primarily operate can offer tremendous insight. It helps bring unconscious patterns to the surface, empowering you to shift from reaction to response, from fear to love, and from ego to soul.
The Four Stages of Spiritual Growth
- To Me (Victim Consciousness)
Life is happening to me. You may feel powerless, at the mercy of circumstances, or frequently in blame. Healing begins when you realize there is another way. - By Me (Manifestor Consciousness)
Life happens by me. You realize your thoughts, beliefs, and actions shape reality. This is the realm of affirmations, vision boards, and empowered self-work. - Through Me (Channel Consciousness)
Life flows through me. You begin to surrender control and allow a higher intelligence to guide your actions. Alignment, intuition, and service lead the way. - As Me (Unity Consciousness)
Life is happening as me. The illusion of separation dissolves. You move in union with the Divine. There is peace, oneness, and embodiment of universal love.
Why It Matters To Know Where You Are
Each stage carries its own beauty and challenge. Becoming aware of your dominant stage helps you:
- Identify unconscious limitations that keep you stuck
- Develop compassion for your current struggles
- Understand what practices will be most supportive for your next evolution
Most importantly, with awareness comes choice. You cannot will yourself into the next stage, but with presence, surrender, and practice, you create the conditions for your soul to deepen. As you shift, you move from living unconsciously to living as a conscious creator. This is where free will becomes truly free.
How to Use This Tool
For each of the 4 quizzes below. read each statement and rate how true it feels for you right now, using this scale:
1 = Not true at all
2 = Slightly true
3 = Somewhat true
4 = Mostly true
5 = Completely true
Be honest. This tool is for you, not to impress anyone.
At the end of each quiz, you will be given a final score. Use the interpretation section to understand where you are now and how to support your growth.
Spiritual Stage Quiz
Interpreting Your Results
The stage with the highest score reflects where you most often operate.
Close second scores suggest areas where you are integrating or transitioning.
Remember: These stages are not linear. You may be in “By Me” in your career, but still feel “To Me” in relationships. This is an unfolding, not a race.
Moving Forward: Reflection & Practice
If you’re mostly in To Me:Reflection: Ask yourself, “Where in my life do I feel most powerless? What am I believing in those moments?”Practice: Begin journaling your emotional patterns and look for recurring victim narratives. Acknowledge them without judgment. Tools: Inner child work, trauma-informed somatic practices (see Client Resource Portal), guided meditations for safety and grounding, and boundary-setting exercises. Support: The main focus of your work at this point should be nervous system regulation to reestablish a foundation of inner safety. |
If you’re mostly in By Me:Reflection: Notice where your self-worth is tied to productivity or success. What are you afraid might happen if you let go of control?Practice: Incorporate intentional rest, spontaneous creativity, and practices that honor being, not just doing. Tools: Affirmations, intention-setting rituals, mirror work, HeartMath coherence practices, and reflective goal-setting that’s soul-aligned. Support: Work with your coach to align your actions with your deeper values, not just ego-driven goals. |
If you’re mostly in Through Me:Reflection: Ask, “What am I being called to surrender to? What truth is trying to move through me?”Practice: Spend time in silence or nature, allowing inspiration to come. Engage in creative flow states and body-based intuitive movement. Tools: Intuitive embodiment practices (see Client Portal), dreamwork, sacred ritual, free-writing, and voice journaling. Support: Join or create sacred space communities or spiritual circles to anchor your gifts with others. |
If you’re mostly in As Me:Reflection: In what areas do I still subtly separate from life or self? Where do I still try to fix or prove?Practice: Ground your oneness in daily tasks. Bring divine presence into ordinary moments. Tools: Presence meditations, self-inquiry (Who am I?), devotional chanting, nature immersion, energy hygiene practices. Support: Support others with your presence and wisdom—but without hierarchy. Be a living example of unity through compassion, service, and simplicity. |
This tool is meant to bring compassion and clarity to your path. You are not behind. You are exactly where your soul needs you to be. And every breath, every insight, every surrender brings you closer to the truth:
